On the ATRL fan forum, Bill Werde, editor-in-chief of Billboard Magazine, answered a fan's question regarding whether or not Christina Aguilera's chances at having a successful comeback can happen for her.

A. Originally posted by BWerde: She's obviously supremely talented - arguably the most talented pure singer of the last several generations of pop stars. So there's always the possibility of a comeback. She can also really rise to a moment. Her tribute to James Brown at grammys after he died didn't make sense to me on paper but instantly became one of my personal top 50 pop moments.

I think she's struggling on two fronts. One, there's the ageism thing in pop. I definitely don't agree with it - in fact I think it's completely awful - but it seems that pop only accepts teens and young 20-somethings singing frankly about sexuality. Xtina and Janet are two examples of women on the wrong side of this bias.

I think another dynamic possibly working against her - and this is just what I hear, not what I've seen - is that she hasn't completely endeared herself to some in the business. It takes a village to be successful - promoters, producers, label execs, agents etc. If you end up with a reputation as being difficult or under-appreciative, it doesn't help you when you're in between hits. Those are the times when you most need the best folks in the biz to want to help you.

Again, I've just heard these things second hand. She was nothing but sweet to me in person.

So what does she need to do if she wants to make a comeback? It all begins and ends with the quality and positioning of the songs. Id say party/Club songs but more upbeat/positive. I'd also like to hear a ballad or two that can stand next to Beautiful. Songs about empowerment and overcoming adversity.

Then she needs to work. Endless promo. A run of small Club dates to reconnect and build buzz. Radio promo out the butt. That sort of thing.

I think the most important question at this point - for her or for anyone in her situation - is, does she really want it?

Christina Aguilera's Keynote Q&A today (Oct. 25) at the Billboard/Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Conference was as colorful as her two-toned blonde/bright red hair: She dropped some f-bombs, spoke plainly about her career, and even belted out a bit of a classic tune.

"Now everyone is a critic," she said with a smile, on the subject of the tabloid press and online bloggers. "I don't read blogs. It's just God-knows-who in Buttf--- wherever writing hate sh--. You can't take it seriously. I'm sure you've all been hated on at some point by buttf--- people."

"It's real talk today," she said at one point to applause.

Bill Werde, Billboard's Editorial Director, joined the singer on a couch in front of a meeting room full of conference attendees at The W Hotel in Hollywood. "Ooh, cozy with Christina!" the singer joked as Werde moved closer to her on the couch, setting the lively and fun tone.

The five-time Grammy winner, whose Max Martin-produced "Your Body" is currently on Billboard's Hot 100, was reflective when answering questions about her nearly lifelong career in music, film and television.

"Sometimes you just know what you're placed on this earth to do," she said of her early days. "Through my childhood I had sort of a chaotic past and upbringing. Music came as a sort of release and escape. Inevitably, you're going to stray toward that path. I started out as a wedding singer singing at block parties at 6, 7 years old. Then came 'Star Search.' That was my first big break at 7 years old. Ed McMahon couldn't say my name right."

She lost "Star Search" but ended up on "The Mickey Mouse Club" by age 12, the same program that of course helped launch Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Ryan Gosling. "Great casting agent," Aguilera said by way of understatement. "I think his name was Mike Casella." (She's correct).

She talked about auditioning for then-A&R man Ron Fair (now a special consultant at Front Line Management) in his office. The pair are still friends. "Our kids go to the same pre-school," she noted. "I walked into his office and he was like, 'Sing for me.' I whipped out Whitney Houston's "Preacher's Wife" gospel songs. That stayed in his mind."

Choosing 10 of our favorite Christina Aguilera songs wasn't the easiest task in the world. With her powerhouse vocals, it was hard to limit the list to just 10, but somehow, we did it. Now a veteran of the music industry, she's arguably considered the Voice of Our Generation, and leaves a legacy of hits behind her. Christina Aguilera songs should be in a genre of their own, considering how hard is is to match her top-notch voice and range — which is why we're paying tribute to XTina with what we think are the Top 10 Christina Aguilera Songs she's released thus far.

'Come on Over Baby (All I Want Is You)'

Everything about this Christina Aguilera song was so amazing, we're still raving about it today. 'Come on Over Baby' was XTina's fourth and last single off of her debut album. It peaked at No. 1 and spawned a Spanish version of the song titled 'Ven Conmigo (Solamente Tú)' — to which we know all the words to as well. Go bilingual us! Anyway, not only is the song great, we also remember the video very fondly, mostly because we wanted her bellybutton crystals and blue low-rise pants more than anything in the world.

'Dirrty'
Feat. Redman

'Dirrty' was the controversial track of the year back in 2002. XTina's good girl image did a complete 180 when it was released and her sexuality was brought to the forefront. Despite being called “desperate and shrill” by Entertainment Weekly, 'Dirrty' was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 45th Grammy Awards. The video infamously featured Aguilera in a boxing ring with a–less chaps and darker makeup. Fashion choices and opinions aside, however, we still get down to this Top 10 Christina Aguilera song.

'I Turn to You'

'I Turn to You' is the first ballad on the list of our favorite Christina Aguilera songs. This track continues to prove how stunningly the girl can belt, but color us surprised when we learned that Diane Warren wrote the song in 1996 and it was first recorded by R&B group All-4One for the 'Space Jam' soundtrack — Aguilera actually covered the song for her first album! Major. Shock. The song itself wasn't too promoted in the U.S., but internationally, the single remained in the No. 1 spot for the first month of its release. It became an international hit and sold over 1.8 million copies worldwide.

'Ain't No Other Man'

This song was a major turning point in Christina's career. Featured on her 'Back to Basics' album, her first album release in four years (and one of our faves), the song reached No. 1 in 10 countries and received critical acclaim. Her voice was also praised in this song, with many critics considering it her greatest vocal achievement. The tune also featured a change in music style — from pop to funk and soul, producing that '30s and '40s vibe — and the song earned her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. We loved the heavily jazz-influenced track and consider this one of her best yet.

'What a Girl Wants'

'What a Girl Wants' was released in 1999 and was Christina's second single off of her debut album. The song became her second consecutive No. 1 single, and her vocals on the song were compared to Mariah Carey's. While we prefer this single, Aguilera herself said otherwise. “I was held back a lot from doing more R&B ad-libbing,” she said of the song. They clearly wanted to make a fresh sounding young pop record and that's not always the direction I wanted to go in.” Well, the song spent 24 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, so despite how she felt about it, the public clearly loved it. As did we.

'Fighter'

Written by Aguilera and Scott Storch, 'Fighter' is an edgier song that features heavy elements of rock music with Dave Navarro on guitar. This Christina Aguilera song became the singer's ninth U.S. Top 20 single and even became the anthem of the 2003 NBA Playoffs. The video reflects the empowering lyrics, as a black-haired Aguilera grows stronger and more thick-skinned against those who try and bring her down. The song basically became every girl's anthem at the time and even we channel Aguilera when we dance to the song in our hip-hop class. Don't judge us…

'Reflection'

It was the note that changed Christina Aguilera's life. In order to record the song 'Reflection' for the soundtrack to 'Mulan,' she had to hit a high E above middle C — if she did it, she knew it'd land her a record deal. She practiced by singing Whitney Houston's 'Run to You,' which featured the same note, and it looks like practice made perfect because Aguilera nailed 'Reflection' and became a superstar shortly thereafter. While the lyrics itself aren't that memorable, it's Aguilera's delivery and the notes she hits that give us goosebumps.

'Candyman'

We can't say enough how much we love 'Candyman.' The third single off of 'Back to Basics,' it was critically-acclaimed for its uptempo beat and swing-influenced sound. Drawing inspiration from the Andrew Sisters' 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,' Christina brings forth a retro feel but still keeps it contemporary with the sexier tone and sing-along lyrics. We also love the '40s-inspired video, featuring Christina as Rosie the Riveter and as old Hollywood starlets like Judy Garland and Betty Grable. The choreography and costumes are also amazing, and well, three Aguileras are way better than just one!

'Genie in a Bottle'

Do you remember the first time you heard 'Genie in a Bottle' back in 1999? Were you in the car with your mom, saying, “Who's this girl trying to be? Britney Spears?” We were! But this Christina girl quickly grew on us and we soon shared a love for both singers. This track was Christina's debut single and with over over 7 million copies sold, 'Genie in a Bottle' became a best-seller and obviously put Aguilera on the map. And after we saw the video and saw her laying on the beach in her cutoff shorts and white crop top, for the first time in our young lives, we wanted to be Christina and not Britney.

'Beautiful'

'Beautiful' is our favorite ballad by Christina and is said to be one of her strongest and best singles ever. It tells the story of individuals fighting against bullies, low self-esteem and insecurity issues, and even earned Aguilera a Grammy as well as a GLAAD Media Award for a positive portrayal of gay and transgender people. It has been culturally embraced given its positive message and is definitely one of the most memorable and greatest Christina Aguilera songs to date. Despite the many artists who have covered the song, including Elvis Costello and Chaka Khan, no one sings it like our Christina.

However, the song "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera is the ultimate song about self acceptance that came out in 2002. Unlike Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera didn't need to take a 20-year old song, copy it note for note, and just change the words.

I'll never forget driving back from work in October of 2002. After Christina's previously released song "Dirrty" caused a backlash, I wasn't too excited when it was announced that a new Christina Aguilera song was coming up. Once the song came on, I was transfixed. "Wow! This is amazing," I thought. I was so touched by the song I had to pull over. I couldn't believe such a song had a profound effect on me, even though I only heard it once.

"Beautiful" was written by Linda Perry and is often considered one of the best written pop songs of all time. However, it's Christina Aguilera's voice that is the biggest charm in this mega-hit. Too often, Aguilera oversings her songs and leaves them void of an emotional connection. This certainly isn't the case with "Beautiful."

My brother, who was often picked on in high school, told me that the song "Beautiful" changed his life in a profound way. For a generation that grew up in the '00s, "Beautiful" remains their theme song.

Even British boy band The Wanted feel unwanted sometimes. Who by? Christina Aguilera. After a recent visit to "The Voice," the band's Tom Parker called Christina "a total b*tch" for apparently refusing to look at and speak to them. They apologized, but now are back at it! Perhaps she was just intimidated? Good looks x (5 boys + 5 British accents) = speechless, in my book. Maybe not for Christina, but chill out boys! Millions of women around the world still kiss your glossy posters goodnight before bed.

Although what Christina did (if she did) was sort of…well…what The Wanted said…let’s not forget about all of the kind things Christina has done over the course of her career.

Here are a just few of them:

+ She donated $200,000 to a Women’s Shelter.

In 2003, Christina donated $200,000 to the Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh (her hometown). The shelter deals specifically with domestic violence survivors and their families -- an issue close to Christina’s heart, as she often speaks on the domestic abuse she witnessed and experienced as a child.

+ She has publically supported the LGBT community for years.

Christina was supporting the LGBT community long before Lady Gaga dressed in meat and wrote “Born This Way”! ‘Tina was one of the first mainstream artists to use gay and transgender images in her 2002 music video for, “Beautiful.” In 2008, she took a public stance against California’s Proposition 8 saying, "Marriage should be about two people celebrating their love for each other. It shouldn't have anything to do with someone's sexual preference." She is also the first celeb named to West Hollywood's Gay Walk of Fame.

Crying song, noun: 1. A song that many sensitive, “heart-broken” individuals cry to alone in their rooms. 2. Emo.

My current crying song is Coldplay’s “Fix You,” but back in the day, Christina Aguilera "Reflection" helped me through my first major breakup. And by “major,” I mean that this guy named Oscar sat with me at lunch on Monday but not on Tuesday. It was devastating.

“Wheeeen will my reflection show whooooo I am insiiiiide?” I don’t know, Christina. I. Don’t. Know. However, I’m certain (or hopeful) that whatever reflection The Wanted saw of you wasn’t “who you really are inside.”

[NEWS] CHRISTINA AGUILERA: REALITY TV'S BEST JUDGE (SURPRISINGLY!)

Last season on The Voice, Christina Aguilera personified the Hot Mess. Joining the show shortly after divorcing husband Jordan Bratman — and amid reports of her hard-partying ways, which led to her arrest for public intoxication in March of 2011 — Aguilera was a mentor more “Dirrty” than “Beautiful." Her season 1 ill-fitting wardrobe was just the start of it — the singer also seemed bored with her new role on reality TV and not entirely committed to mentoring her eager contestants. Her comebacks to Adam Levine’s barbs were typically awkward, and her self-promotion tactics went into overdrive. Yes, Beverly McClellan’s “Beautiful” duet with Aguilera was fittingly gorgeous… but it was also a cover of “Beautiful.” Why push your music on a series you're already headlining?

But what a difference six months make. Sure, Aguilera’s wardrobe has yet to completely redeem itself — though her high-collared shirts last night were a definite improvement over her Battle Round Barbarella-meets-Royal Wedding look — but the singer sure has. Over the course of season 2, Aguilera has managed to turn herself into the reality series’ most valuable mentor. Not only have her Levine-directed insults become sharper, but her passion during the blind auditions also allowed her to lock in some of the buzziest contestants. (See: Current frontrunner Jesse Campbell.) And she’s already proved she’s guiding her team on a successful path: The singer was spot-on when she warned contestants during the blind auditions that she would have more time to commit than busy countryman Blake Shelton — Aguilera’s song suggestions for her team last night were far fresher and more fitting for each contestant. (Seth and Amy say, really Blake Shelton? “Livin’ On a Prayer,” “Alone,” and “Living for the City” for your team? American Idol called — it wants its season 3 material back.)

Perhaps more impressively, during last night’s first live show, Aguilera officially established herself as the only useful talent judge left on popular reality TV. Following Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul’s Idol exit, the Fox singing series has been weighed down by three judges seemingly incapable of critiquing contestants, no matter how much they butcher Adele. (I know — it seems mean to shoot Eben Franckewitz when he’s down, but dear God, boy.) And, so far this season, The Voice’s panel has been guilty of the same crime — until Aguilera finally called out Naia Kete for her thin cover of Adele’s “Turning Tables.” Can we give her a round of applause for finally channeling that honest voice within?

Now, don’t get me wrong: There’s still enough mess in the much-hotter Aguilera to keep her entertaining. The aforementioned wardrobe that dangerously borders on malfunction, the hilarious stage mom instincts that lead her to mimic her contestants’ dance moves from her spinning chair, etc. But her actions on this season of The Voice have also reminded us that the girl’s damn talented — not only does she know how to bring out the best in other singers, but she allows her singers to bring out the best in her. One of my favorite moments of this season remains Aguilera’s impromptu duet with Sera Hill — there’s no doubt that Alpha Aguilera saw this as an opportunity to prove her vocal dominance, but it was a moment as sweet as it was calculated. Would Cee Lo turn away from Erin Martin’s legs long enough to be inspired by the most talented on his team? Purrfect says “No no no.”

So let’s applaud Aguilera for her work thus far on season 2 of The Voice — it was about time for her arrival. And NBC should be sending her one big fruit basket to wear on her head: Her commitment to the series makes it that much harder for TV fans to throw in the towel when it comes to The Voice. Even this dedicated Idol fan has fully embraced being blasphemous by throwing her UFO hat into the series. So, please, Aguilera: Continue delivering good TV and quality reality show judging — how refreshing it’s been to see you rub us Voice fans the right way. Wait, is that gross?
