[NEWS] THE LEGACY OF 'BIONIC': WHY CHRISTINA AGUILERA'S MOST MISUNDERSTOOD ALBUM WAS ACTUALLY AHEAD OF ITS TIME

Hey Little Dreamers! I'm Sam Lansky, pop scholar, and this is Pop Think, my weekly column dedicated to shining a light on the oft-ignored corners of the pop music universe. Let's get to it:

Is there a pop album from the last several years that was as unjustly sh***ed on (to borrow sentiment from Nicki Minaj) as Christina Aguilera's Bionic? The big-voiced chanteuse's sixth studio album received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially, while her image took a beating in the press for being messy and misdirected, even though the record was, at times, precociously brilliant.

So, surprise! As your resident pop apologist, on the eve of the two-year anniversary of Bionic's release (time flies, doesn't it, kids?), I'm traveling back through time to take a look back at Christina's wildly misunderstood, sometimes-genius Bionic—and reflecting on how the ferocious songbird, who's found a new life as the HBIC on "The Voice," had a surprisingly forward-thinking approach on her last album.

Expectations ran exceptionally high for Christina Aguilera's album Bionic, with a list of top-shelf collaborators both mainstream and indie; big names like Tricky Stewart, Ester Dean, Nicki Minaj, and Polow da Don were joined by more alt-leaning voices like Ladytron, Le Tigre, Santigold, Peaches, and Sia, for a sound that promised to be diverse and collaborative. But that left-of-center sound was missing from the album's debut single, "Not Myself Tonight," an aggressive stomper that drew comparisons to Lady Gaga and peaked at a decent-but-not-great #23 on the Hot 100. The second single, "Woohoo," featuring Nicki Minaj, topped out at a dismal #79 on that same chart, and the final effort, "You Lost Me," failed to enter the Hot 100 at all — Christina's first single to do so. Quietly, and without much fanfare, the Bionic era drew to a close.

So. What went wrong? Her collaborator, Daniel Hunt of Ladytron, blamed RCA, saying bluntly that Christina's label "f***ed up everything" when it came to putting together the final album. And while it's always convenient to blame the label for the faults of an artist, it did certainly seem as though Christina's original artistic vision — to create a distinctively fresh product — got muddled somewhere along the way, perhaps by the overreaching commercial expectations of a chart-conscious team.

But Ladytron was right -- most of the album's best tracks were relegated to the bonus tracks only available on the deluxe edition of the album. And what's startling is how thrilling most those songs are two years after their release. If the tracks on the standard edition were modern but fairly pedestrian, split neatly between uptempo, hypersexual club bangers like "Desnudate" and "Glam" and weepy ballads like "Lift Me Up" and "You Lost Me," the songs on the deluxe edition are forward-thinking and even timeless, galactic pop with subversive, ambient production. The hand-claps and dissonant layered vocals on "Monday Morning," co-penned by San by Santigold, evoke the '80s with subtlety and charm (it wouldn't sound out of place on Ladyhawke's first album). "Bobblehead" is a dazzlingly weird rap-and-percussion diss track, and the Ladytron-produced "Birds of Prey" is a masterwork of sinister bad-trip anxiety. My personal favorite, though, is "Little Dreamer," the iTunes bonus track, another Ladytron collab, which walks the tightrope between wistful affection and melancholy grief, and shows off Christina's vocals at their finest: Powerful, emotive, and more controlled than the melismatic belting for which she's frequently recognized.

In its own way, Bionic neatly illustrates the dangers artists face when aggressively trying to keep up with "current" music: Mainstream music is a runaway express train hurtling itself toward the trendiest end of the pop music zeitgeist. As a result, futuristic pop track can already sound dated by the time it's released. And even when they don't, those chart-chasing songs don't age particularly gracefully. But two years after the fact, Bionic's moments of greatness remain about as good as it gets. On her next album, I'm gunning for Christina to show us that side of her, stronger than ever.

[RUMOR] CHRISTINA AGUILERA'S NEW SINGLE MAY BE 'COMING' SOONER THAN EXPECTED

This is the first rumor in regards to the new material that is backed by someone who has established credibility.

A couple years ago, on the eve of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, the source accurately revealed the setlist for the medley that Christina performed the following day (Bionic, Not Myself Tonight, and Woohoo).

Evidently, Christina's new single will be released in two-three weeks and will be promoted with a live performance on 'The Voice.' Furthermore, a summer release for the album is still the plan for now.

With all rumors, let's take this into consideration with a grain of salt since anything could change. However, it is beyond exciting!

[NEWS] CLAUDE KELLY: 'SONGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW I WROTE' #WOOHOO

SONGS YOU DIDNT KNOW I WROTE:
“WOOHOO” - Christina Aguilera (@TheRealXtina)

I wrote this lil cheeky tune with the incredible Ester Dean, and Christina, of course.

Polow da Don produced it.

It's kind of funny, this song is still the **** to me. The backlash on Xtina was so massive at the time that i dont think it got the love it deserved.

It featured Nicki Minaj who was just bubbling at the time. I would be willing to bet that if it had been Nicki’s song featuring Xtina it would’ve gotten the attention it deserved.

It's a perverted lil' song that's right in line with what’s being said on radio from everyone else right now. I guess thats what happens when you put me, Ester, and Christina in a room. A lot of dirty jokes, laughing, and big singing.

I dont give a **** what the critics say, IMHO there were some gems on her Bionic album, and this was one of em.

[NEWS] BEST YOU NEVER HEARD: THE 'BIONIC' SPECIAL

With Christina Aguilera‘s latest single ‘Love Your Body‘ expected to make its debut any time soon, the buzz surrounding the project and its supporting album have undeniably reached fever pitch within the last week.

Set to hit stores in coming months, the yet to be named album will arrive two years after the release of ’Bionic‘, the entertainer’s fifth and most heavily debated LP to date.

So in celebration of the release, which many would agree came to an untimely ‘death’ after struggling to live up to the commercial success of its predecessors, That Grape Juice dedicates this very special edition of ‘Best You Never Heard‘ to Bionic, naming four of our favorite but oft overlooked cuts from the LP.

Get into it below…

‘Woohoo (Ft Nicki Minaj)’

From its stuttering beat to its ‘tongue in cheek’ lyrics, Woohoo is in many ways the older and perhaps more uninhibited sister of 2002′s ‘Dirrty‘.

Fun, sexy and enjoyably filthy, the jam’s unashamed approach to what some might label a ‘taboo topic’ served to cement Christina’s status as one of Pop’s braver entities, heated up even further with a predictably scorching verse from foul mouthed Pop Princess Nicki Minaj.
‘Vanity’

‘I’m not cocky…’

Keeping in theme with the album’s loud, fierce and abrasive theme, Vanity makes for the ultimate party anthem. Armed with finger snapping verses and an annoyingly infectious hook, this shamelessly narcissistic club classic serves just as much heat today as it did when it first fell in our laps over a year ago.
‘Stronger Than Ever’

A feature on the LP’s deluxe edition, many could be forgiven for not knowing that such a song even exists.

Indeed, despite standing side by side with ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Voice Within’ as being one of Christina’s more heart felt ballads, ‘Stronger’ felt the full wrath of the media’s blacklisting of Bionic and thus found itself fading into obscurity once the project’s plug was finally pulled.

Showcasing the vocal restraint many accuse of the performer of not using enough of, the number’s slow but powerfully sincere start makes Aguilera’s trademark belting style toward the end of the cut all the more enjoyable.

Here’s to hoping album #6 delivers more of the same.
‘Glam’

Undoubtedly the closest thing this generation has to Madonna‘s ‘Vogue‘, Glam- in our opinion- could have easily restored interest in ‘Bionic’ had it been the given the single treatment and a supporting video equally as innovative as the track itself.

Almost as though she found a way to channel a Neon stained Tokyo night and compress it into a 3 minute long song, Glam‘s dreamlike backing track and couture-centric theme makes it Christina’s strongest dance effort, far superior- dare we say- to the well produced but poorly received ‘Not Myself Tonight‘.

Editor's Note:
Saw this yesterday and decided to post it since news is slow. Insert eye roll here at "Best You Never Heard." Bionic was the second highest most downloaded album of 2010 and don't you forget it.

[NEWS] CHRISTINA AGUILERA EVEN LOOKS LIKE SHE SINGS WELL

Nobody can sing like Christina Aguilera. That's obvious. But you know what else? Nobody can look like they're singing like Christina Aguilera, either.

Just today, the platinum blond bombshell performed live on the Today show to promote the release of her upcoming album, Bionic. And in looking at the snaps from her performance, I was struck by just how much of a pro she has become at looking like she's singing really well. I mean, she sings really well! But part of that is that she really looks like she's singing well.

For instance, the above is clearly Christina trilling away at some point in a song, showing off her scale-climbing ability.

Below, we see her obviously singing the word, "yeaheahaha," with all her might:
And it's not just the really acrobatic singing! Here's the singing face Christina makes when she is singing provocative lyrics about her "Woohoo" or something...
